Leap of Faith

Behind the Scenes

I’m not the most patient artist. Even though many of my pieces take a long time, it’s usually because my schedule has sabotaged my progress. If something isn’t right, I’ll tear it down and start again; cut off a piece and keep moving forward. It’s equal parts cathartic and terrifyingly exhilarating. This piece was nearly complete when I looked at it and suddenly decided it sucked.

Of course, I destroyed it.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be happy with the sculpt, but I can say that I finished it quickly. And the paint job came out the way I wanted on the first pass. Unfortunately, the pictures can’t demonstrate the effect—with the colors on the figure changing as you move around it, from the lapis/turquoise blue to the deep purples. This is just one of those that’s more engaging in person. The gold leaf is legit gold, as well. Had to be.

Leap of Faith

Leap of Faith

If you portray someone who’s jumping, you don’t normally choose to show their eyes closed, but a leap of faith is meant to be taken blind. The details and elements of the design, both in the sculpting and the paint treatment are particularly deliberate—but it’s up to the viewer to pick out all the messages. Although the piece is more or less “realistic,” there are abstract or representational elements I tried to incorporate. Many of my favorite sculptures tell a story. Some are a poem. Some are a statement.

This one is meant to be one of the above, or maybe all three.

Consequently, the resin and bronze castings in this edition were also produced through traditional mold making and manufacturing processes. Final Manifest Sculpt commissions are available in a variety of materials, but they are not 3D printed and are not available as printable files.
