The Universe

Behind the Scenes

I sculpted this piece as a birthday present for my wife who, besides being an incredible mother, is an amazing teacher and bonus mother to so many children. It doesn’t take much to see the universe—the endless possibilities—in a child, but so many look away or forget. She never looks away or forgets.

I used images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope as reference for the paint job. The births of stars, nebulae and galaxies, all present in this little beauty. What parent hasn’t sensed this on some subconscious level before?

The Universe

The Universe

The children’s version of the Encyclopedia Brittanica suggests defining the universe in the following way to a child:

“The universe is everything that exists—all matter and all energy—throughout space and time. It includes all the tens of billions of trillions of stars in all the galaxies. It includes everything between the stars, including nebulae and planets.”

That’s pretty good.

For most parents, there’s some moment when everything they could ever imagine—their entire universe, as it were—is reflected in their child. Nothing is as awe-inspiring. The love a parent can feel for their child is limitless and ever-expanding, a great metaphor for the universe. The possibilities and responsibilities seem immense and beggar comprehension. It’s almost too much… and yet, it simply is, so you get on with it. And often, we slip into the mundane, day-to-day rhythms of life and forget how big the universe is, how big our love and can be. It’s good to take a moment to remember—not reconnect, because those connections are never lost or broken, just ignored—and feel the important things again.

The Love. The Universe. You’re there.

Let’s make something amazing together
